How Discount is Calculated

A discount is a reduction from the original price of a product or service. It is usually expressed as a percentage. Knowing how to calculate discounts quickly helps you make smarter shopping decisions and compare deals effectively.

Find Sale Price
Sale Price = Original × (1 − Discount% / 100)
Find Discount %
Discount% = (Original − Sale Price) / Original × 100
Find Original Price
Original = Sale Price / (1 − Discount% / 100)

Common Discount Examples

Original Discount Sale Price You Save
₹1,000 10% ₹900 ₹100
₹1,000 20% ₹800 ₹200
₹1,000 30% ₹700 ₹300
₹1,000 50% ₹500 ₹500
₹1,000 70% ₹300 ₹700

Types of Discounts

  • Percentage discount: Most common — "20% off" means you pay 80% of the original price
  • Flat discount: Fixed amount off — "₹200 off on orders above ₹999"
  • Buy one get one (BOGO): Equivalent to 50% off when you need two items
  • Cashback: Not a real discount — money returned after purchase, often with conditions
  • Bundle discount: Lower price when buying multiple items together
  • Seasonal sale: End of season clearance — often 40–70% off

Is the Deal Actually Good?

Retailers often inflate the "original price" before a sale to make the discount look bigger. Always check the product's price history before buying. A genuine 30% discount saves real money — a fake one from an inflated MRP does not.

Tips for Smart Shopping

  • Compare the sale price with prices on other platforms
  • Check the price 30 days before a sale event
  • Factor in delivery charges — they can eat your savings
  • Use cashback credit cards for extra savings on top of discounts

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about discount calculation

Multiply the original price by 0.20 to get the discount amount, then subtract from the original. Example: 20% off ₹1,500 = ₹1,500 × 0.20 = ₹300 discount. Sale price = ₹1,500 − ₹300 = ₹1,200. Or simply multiply by 0.80: ₹1,500 × 0.80 = ₹1,200.
Use: Original = Sale Price / (1 − Discount% / 100). Example: If sale price is ₹800 after 20% off — Original = 800 / (1 − 0.20) = 800 / 0.80 = ₹1,000. Use the "Original" tab in the calculator above to solve this instantly.
Discount% = (Original − Sale Price) / Original × 100. Example: Original ₹1,000, Sale price ₹750 — Discount% = (1000 − 750) / 1000 × 100 = 250 / 1000 × 100 = 25%. Use the "Disc %" tab above to calculate this automatically.
A discount reduces the price you pay upfront — you immediately pay less. Cashback is money returned to you after the purchase, often as wallet credits or bank credits with conditions and expiry dates. A 20% instant discount is almost always better than a 20% cashback offer.
Successive discounts are NOT added together. A 20% discount followed by a 10% discount is not 30% off. You calculate each on the remaining price: ₹1,000 → 20% off = ₹800 → 10% off = ₹720. The effective discount is 28%, not 30%.
