How Much Should You Tip?

Tipping customs vary widely by country and service type. In the United States, 15–20% is standard for restaurant service. In India, 10% is common. In the UK, 10–15% is typical. In Japan, tipping can be considered rude.

Tip Formula
Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip
Per Person = Total ÷ People

Quick Mental Math

  • 10%: Move decimal left. $47 → $4.70
  • 15%: Take 10%, add half. $4.70 + $2.35 = $7.05
  • 20%: Take 10%, double it. $4.70 × 2 = $9.40
  • 25%: Take 20%, add 5%. $9.40 + $2.35 = $11.75

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about tipping and splitting bills

Move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it. For a $45 bill: 10% = $4.50, doubled = $9.00. Total = $54.00. For 15%, take 10% and add half — $4.50 + $2.25 = $6.75 tip.
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is traditional in the US. Tipping on the post-tax total is also common. The difference is small. This calculator uses whatever bill amount you enter, so input either pre-tax or post-tax based on your preference.
Tipping is never legally mandatory but is expected in some countries, especially the US, where servers often earn below minimum wage and rely on tips. Some restaurants add an automatic 18–20% charge for large groups — always check your bill before adding more.
The round up button rounds your total to the next whole number. For example if your total is $54.78 it rounds to $55.00. The extra $0.22 is added to your tip. This is a common way to leave a slightly larger tip and make cash payment simpler.
A minimum of 15–20% is recommended for food delivery, with a floor of $3–5 regardless of order size. For large orders, bad weather, or long distances 20% or more is appreciated. Unlike restaurant tipping, delivery workers typically keep 100% of their tips.
