Why cups and grams are not the same
A cup is a measure of space and a gram is a measure of weight. One cup of water weighs about 237 grams, but one cup of maida weighs only about 125 grams, because flour is light and full of air. That is why this converter asks which ingredient you are using. Pick the ingredient, type the amount and you get the right answer in cups, spoons, millilitres, grams, ounces and pounds.
The list has more than 50 ingredients used in Indian kitchens, such as maida, atta, besan, sooji, basmati rice, dals, ghee, jaggery and curd, along with the usual baking items.
What you can do here
- Cups, grams and spoons: convert in both directions and see the same amount in every unit. Results show friendly fractions like 1 ½ cups.
- Cup and spoon size: a US cup is 237 ml, a metric cup is 250 ml, and an old UK cup is 284 ml. Choose the one your recipe uses.
- Scale a recipe: paste your ingredients, set how many people it serves and how many you want, and get new amounts. You can show them in grams and millilitres, copy them or print them.
- Oven and pan size: change Celsius, Fahrenheit and gas mark, and find how much to scale a recipe when your pan is a different size.
- Quick charts: spoons and cups, cups to grams, oven marks, butter, eggs and yeast.
Tips for better results
Use a scale for baking
Cakes and breads are fussy. A cup of flour can weigh 120 grams or 150 grams depending on how you scoop it. Weighing in grams gives the same result every time.
Spoon the flour, do not scoop
If you only have cups, spoon the flour into the cup and level it with a knife. Do not press it down. Our weights use this way.
Katori and glass
Home katori and glass sizes differ. We use 150 ml for a katori and 250 ml for a glass. If yours is different, measure it once with water and use millilitres.
